How to Cheat on OnVUE (Pearson VUE): What Its Check-In Looks For, and How We Handle It

OnVUE is the application Pearson VUE candidates download to sit an exam from home. It runs a system test first, then a check-in: it photographs your face and both sides of your ID, has you photograph the room front, back, left and right, checks your microphone, webcam and connection speed, and requires you to close every other application so only OnVUE shows in the task bar. External monitors, TVs and projectors have to be disconnected, and only water in a clear container is allowed on the desk. After the automated steps a live proctor takes over, confirms the rules, and starts the exam.

The pattern is the same as other live remote proctoring, tuned to Pearson's flow. It wants your face in frame the whole time, no second person in the room, no phone or second screen in reach, and nothing on the desk beyond what is permitted. Where a physical whiteboard is allowed it must be shown to the camera front and back before and after. The common triggers are the ordinary ones: leaving frame, a voice in the room, a background application the system spots, or a device it did not expect. Before any of the proctoring happens, OnVUE runs a system test: microphone, webcam, connection speed, and whether it can close everything else on the machine. This is the step that quietly ends more attempts than the proctor ever does. An underpowered laptop, a flaky connection, a docking station, or a corporate machine you do not have admin rights on will fail the check or drop the session mid-exam, and a dropped session on a real exam is its own problem.

This is why our setup happens before the day, not on it. We confirm the machine passes the system test in the same conditions you will sit the exam in, so the check-in on the day is a formality rather than the moment you find out your webcam resolution is too low or your connection stalls under load.

One point of confusion worth clearing up: when the GMAT Online first launched it used OnVUE, and it later moved to Examity for the online proctoring. OnVUE is not tied to one exam, which is part of why it is worth its own page. Pearson VUE delivers a large share of the professional certification world, and OnVUE is the online-proctored version of many of those exams: IT and cloud certifications, finance and accounting credentials, language tests like the PTE, and the GMAT Online in its earlier form. If you are sitting a Pearson VUE exam from home, you are almost certainly meeting OnVUE.

That breadth is useful to know because the check-in and the rules are consistent across all of them. The exam content changes, the proctoring does not, so a client who has sat one OnVUE exam knows what the next one looks like, and our process is the same shape regardless of which certification or test is on the other side of it.

Do I need to remove a second monitor? Yes. OnVUE requires extra monitors, TVs and projectors to be disconnected, so we sort the desk out before the day rather than during check-in.
